The Locust Tree in Flower (2012)

by John Lane

The Locust Tree in Flower
    1. The Locust Tree in Flower (first version)
    2. A Sort of a Song
    3. Dedication for a Plot of Ground
    4. The Locust Tree in Flower (second version)

The Locust Tree in Flower is a setting of William Carlos Williams poems for a speaking/intoning solo percussionist. When I first read "Dedication for a Plot of Ground," I intuitively wanted to sing or, rather, "intone" the text. That poem has been set as such, with two pitches intoned throughout and punctuated by drums and rattles. Williams published two versions of "The Locust Tree in Flower," which serve as stark bookends for this setting.
